DL-workbench

A meta-model based platform for ontology manipulation.

Overview

It's really worth for you to read something about Description Logics (Good presentation is here, another paper, a book) if you never did it before. Otherwise it can be difficult to understand what does DL-workbench do.

Nowadays many ontological editors are available. However, several specific requirements forced us to develop a new ontology edition platform which we call DL-workbench. DL-workbench contains three main modules. First module defines a meta-model for description of ontological formalisms. It provides an API that allows management of ontological entities, containers of entities, reasoner connection and many other features that are useful when one needs to use an ontological model within its project. A second module of DL-workbench is a formalism-independent user interface for edition of meta-model based ontologies. This module uses the meta-model and is implemented as a plug-in to the IBM Eclipse [10] platform. A third module defines the SHIQ description logic [7] formalism using the meta-model. The third module provides also customization for the user interface of the second module (such as images, literal names, etc.). DAML+OIL [8] is used within this module as a persistent format. DL-workbench pays much attention to the management of complex logical equations as well as management of many ontologies within a project. DL-workbench allows easy integration of ontological model with other data inside one standalone or distributed application. DL-workbench can be used both as the ontological editor and as an ontology manipulation platform integrated with other tools and environments. This web site presents the project.

Authors would like to acknowledge the creators of
OilEd ontology editor for many useful UI ideas within the OilEd and for creation of DIG interface.

Useful information for those of you who are not used with reading of documentation

This link goes to a small readme, that explains briefly how to work with the product.
If you don't have experience of work with Eclipse environment, it's really worth for you to read the readme.

Legal information

This software is distributed as open source under the Common Public License V1.0. Please read it and the DL-Workbench Software User agreement before downloading the product.
Please be aware, that this distribution includes third-party software :

Even the majority of these software is open source, you must agree with terms of their licenses before downloading and/or distributing the DL-workbench.

Downloads

Attention: Java 1.4.1 is required for this product (due to the support of string regular expressions and URIs)

Here you can download the latest version of the platform. If you want, you can download full Eclipse platform separately from http://www.eclipse.org

DL-workbench V1.1 with Eclipse 2.1 runtime included, self-contained package (zip file, binaries for Win32) (Readme)

DL-workbench V1.1 (requires Eclipse 2.1 to be installed) (zip file, binaries for Win32) (Readme)

V0.9 M3 sources with Eclipse project files (zip file) (Readme) Sources are temporarily removed from the site. Will be published in several days (watch "news" mailing list). We apologize for the inconvenience.

Source code is published, however JavaDoc is still quite empty. Wait a bit... I shall find time to upgrade it.

Remark: We use Racer as DL reasoner. Racer shall be download separately. Follow this link to get Racer distribution.

Remark: Linux /SunOS versions can be delivered on  request.

Documentation

The documentation is under the revision. Please refer the section of "Publications" in order to get some materials. Also see this README

The documentation is packaged the distribution (see above). The links below provide separate access to the documentation.

Mailing lists

Project mailing lists for DL-workbench are hosted on Sourceforge.net. The project has two mailing lists:

dl-workbench-news at sourceforge.net- very low traffic - for announcements of new versions, updates, other important notices. You can't post to this list. [subscribe / unsubscribe / preferences]

dl-workbench-discussions at sourceforge.net - traffic up to subscribers (unknown for now) - for discussions, questions, user feedbacks. Everyone can post to it. [subscribe / unsubscribe /preferences]
