|The history of the Company goes back to 1980 when the famous EUCLID CAD system was announced by Matra Datavision, a French based company. EUCLID-IS, the first integrated CAD/CAM system, appeared in 1987 and was the first CAD platform ported to Sun Solaris. Then, in 1993, EUCLID 3 was released. This was a completely new and unique system that supported concurrent engineering.|
From the beginning of the eighties to the mid-nineties Matra Datavision was an unconditional market leader in the field of CAD/CAM. EUCLID, its primary product was employed in the widest variety of engineering domains, from general mechanical and automotive engineering to the complex robotics and aerospace industries.
1993 is the year when a development platform called CAS.CADE (Computer Aided Software for Computer Aided Design and Engineering), created by Matra Datavision specialists, was released. CAS.CADE was initially considered as a set of software tools for internal purposes that would allow software developers apply the object-oriented technology. This approach enabled Matra Datavision to become the first CAD/CAM/CAE software company to get the ISO 9001 international certificate for its highest-quality software.
CAS.CADE had been used by Matra Datavision as a platform to develop EUCLID QUANTUM, a new generation of EUCLID that appeared in 1996. However, a few years later, in 1998 Matra Datavision changed its strategy and became a software service provider. That year the company signed an agreement with Dassault Systèmes that acquired some products from the QUANTUM product line - Euclid Styler, Euclid Machinist, Strim, etc.
Since the primary focus was made on services, Matra Datavision established a new business model around CAS.CADE. In 1999 Matra Datavision made an unexampled decision - it published CAS.CADE in open source on the Internet as Open CASCADE, while focusing on rendering services around it.
One year after that publication, on December 7, 2000 Matra Datavision announced the foundation of OPEN CASCADE S.A.S., its subsidiary for support and development of the Open CASCADE platform as well as for carrying out numerous custom development projects for its customers.
Matra Datavision, the parent company of OPEN CASCADE SAS was purchased by IBM in 2003, while OPEN CASCADE S.A.S. was acquired by Principia Research & Development - a French editor of finite-element solvers and provider of engineering services.
In 2004 Open CASCADE software was renamed to Open CASCADE Technology to clearly distinguish the name of the OPEN CASCADE company from the software platform it develops.
In 2007 OPEN CASCADE SAS became a subsidiary of EURIWARE, which is a subsidiary of the AREVA group.
Today OPEN CASCADE keeps its leading positions in providing open source software and services in the area of CAD, CAM, CAE, AEC, GIS. Since the release of major version 5.0 in May 2003 and till the end of the same year there were almost 10,000 downloads of the product from more than 60 countries worldwide! That is twice as much as during the whole year 2000 when the CAS.CADE platform source code was just made publicly available. More than half of Open CASCADE Technology users are situated in France, a lot of customers are located in Europe and North America.
Although the Company adheres to a policy of regular stable releases of Open CASCADE Technology, the focus is made on custom development projects based on the Open CASCADE Technology platform (as well as on the new recently developed one - Salome, a platform for integration of numerical simulations). Today OPEN CASCADE S.A.S. is a highly-experienced and professional team of 80 developers providing customized application development and services associated with its flagship platforms including helpdesk support, training, technical assistance and consulting. The Company has dozens of large clients from all over the world, including CEA (French agency of atomic energy), BMW (Germany), SAMTECH (Belgium), EADS CCR (France), RINA (Italy), Alcatel Space (France), MITUTOYO UK...
